SGTA kindly asks that you gather with your fellow peers, take a picture before or after school with your shirts and hats and send it to your rep so we can post on our Facebook page. We would like to show our support for students and their rights to a fair and appropriate education. Why May 1st? May 1st has been historically linked to international workers’ rights. It started, May 1 1886 when the U.S. Federation of Organized Trade and Labor Unions – which included immigrant workers from all over – ruled that an 8-hour work day, would be a full and legal work day. More recently, May Day has served as a national day of action to raise awareness about immigration rights and the need to keep families together as they fight for a better life. Attached are more reasons to join the cause. Thank you for your time.
SGTA would like to take a moment to recognize the recent achievements across our district. Congratulations to the dedicated individuals who made these awards possible!
2017 Support Music Merit Award - Roosevelt MIE Program: Roosevelt Elementary School joins 1 percent of schools across the United States to earn a 2017 Support Music Merit Award for bolstering young learners’ education with comprehensive music instruction that complements core curriculum. The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation recognized Roosevelt’s Music Immersion Experience (MIE) program, which ensures access to music instruction to all of its students for free. “Over the course of the year, we’ve watched our students become more confident in their abilities and engaged in the classroom because of their involvement in MIE,” MIE Coordinator Samantha Theisen said. “We’re forever thankful to the District for its support of MIE and honored to be recognized for our music education efforts.” California Gold Ribbon School - Gabrielino: Gabrielino High School has been named a 2017 California Gold Ribbon School for its efforts to increase English learner graduation rates and improve college eligibility for Hispanic students. The Gold Ribbon, California’s highest academic designation, was created as a substitute for the California Distinguished Schools Program while the state transitions to a new academic accountability tool. The designation is reserved for middle and high schools this year. “This honor validates the work of the school faculty and administration," Gabrielino Principal Sharron Heinrich said. “It recognizes our efforts to offer innovative, practical and data-driven programs that ensure all of our students are succeeding.” Campaign for Business and Education Excellence - Coolidge, McKinley, Washington, Wilson and Jefferson: Five San Gabriel Unified schools were named to the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) 2016 Honor Roll for narrowing the achievement gap and for performing strongly on California standardized tests. Every San Gabriel Unified Star School showed strong improvements in English language arts scores for English learners and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Four of the five schools also showed increased math scores among both student populations, with English language arts score improvements topping 20 percent among English learners. Hello SGTA,

This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our union, state and local laws, member benefits, negotiations, standardized testing, LCAP and much more! SGTA is willing to reimburse you for registration & mileage, which also includes a single room and meals. If you are interested in attending, please tell me or Chanda and register ASAP! https://ctago.org/events/2017-summer-institute/ Thank you, Terri SGTA is always looking to expand our capacity and build our team! The Declaration of Candidacy form for Site Representative is due to Edith Gonzales by Tuesday, April 25th at 2:00 p.m., no exceptions.
Please consider becoming a site rep or helping our team in other ways! Thanks! -- Terri Hello SGTA,
Our LCAP Committee, which is called the Educational Advisory Committee, met last Friday April 14th to continue discussions around our districts vision for the LCAP Plan and our 3 goals. (Conditions of Learning, Maximizing Student Achievement, and Engaging Learning Environments) A survey was sent out to all SGUSD staff by our Asst. Supt. Tiffany Rudek, and unfortunately only 63 people responded. While we may have our own personal reasons as to why we didn't fill out the survey, our committee really wants to hear your honest and candid opinions! This is YOUR OPPORTUNITY to share your thoughts about your school climate, curriculum, parental involvement, safety, and most of all your thoughts on closing the achievement gap and ensure that all students graduate from SGUSD and are college and/or career ready. So please take a few moments to click on this link and voice your opinion. Your principals will be able to disseminate the data for individual schools and can share the responses with their respective sites. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2017LCAPSGStaff Thank you, Dena On Wednesday during 6th period, my TA put the form in your box if you want to run for SGTA rep. Chanda and I are running again and would love some competition (read: help)
If you did not get a form in your box and your want to run, please let me know. Voting will be soon - not on Friday with Collaboration time voting. Voting on Collaboration time is Friday at lunch in Christina Shi's room. -- Terri Hello SGTA members, Here is a great opportunity for an evening of fun on Friday, May 19th at Dodger Stadium.
