Congrats to Lon Sellars and Sharon Heinrich. Offer a personal compliment to our Task Force. Thank all who have been involved in safely open schools. Yesterday our Governor and legislature reached a compromise on K-14 Funding, 10% cut seems to be mitigated with deferred payments but at least the Governor has made a commitment to support K-14. Thank you to CSEA, Unions, Staff Members and all who wrote letters to the Governor. GAB will be featured tomorrow night on Channel 4 News. B. REPORT - Superintendent Jim Symonds- Since the last board meeting so much has changed. The death of George Floyd has led us to take proactive measures to talk about the experiences of students in our district. We value equity and access. Equity and Social Justice website has since been launched. LGBTQ community is being given the attention they deserve. This has been the most difficult ending of a school year and everyone has done a fantastic job. The Governor and legislature has come to an agreement and we won’t suffer the -10%. On-line Learning Team has been doing good work. C. REPORT - Task Force to Re-Open San Gabriel Unified (See Attachment of Complete Presentation and sample Virtual Academy Schedules for SPED, ELEM, JEFF, GAB) Asst. Supt Joan Perez - Developing a plan for a Virtual Academy. Jim Symonds - Watching surrounding districts. Nothing is being presented tonight as a final plan, all is subject to change. Kathy Leon - Nurses have not been involved in the planning of re-opening schools and feels lucky to be asked for her input. Kathy reviewed the use of PPE. Andrew Ammon- Any way of telling what the county is leaning towards in light of all of the changes? Kathy Leon-No Andrew Ammon- Any litigation tied to COVID-19 and will it affect the district budget? Kathy Leon- It’s been talked about but no guidance. Joan Perez- There’s a chance that any district can face litigation. Will have to provide some sort of Distance Learning. Most parents prefer full day. We will shift from Distance Learning to Virtual Academy. Distance Learning was pandemic driven, all hands on deck teaching. Virtual Academy will be a different model. SPED - Need a model with 60% day on campus. Increase flexibility. Elementary - Sandra Dunvill - Preliminary Plan - Staggered school start and end times. Use WED as PD, grade level meetings, Will take plan back to bargaining unit members. Open to suggestions. Jefferson Middle School Preliminary Plan - Chris Guyer - Based on guidelines given two weeks ago. We can fit about ⅓ of JMS population on campus to keep them safely distanced. Students and teachers on campus for one full day a week (see scheduling ideas). Gabrielino - Sharon Heinrich - This proposal is preliminary and has not been shared with teachers yet. Divided the week by grade level (see scheduling ideas). Teachers have 5-6 students in embedded time. DEL MAR - Enrollment is far less than at GAB. May be able to bring them back in a more traditional setting. Joan Perez - We will be taking these preliminary plans back to SGTA. Christina Alvarado - Confused with some of the schools’ scheduling ideas. What is the student doing on the 4 days that they are not on campus? Dr. Scott - Will the state make accommodations for Instructional Minutes? Will Wong - So far, accomodations for In person and Distance Learning won't be allowed. Dr. Scott- Understands the complexity for teachers of putting together on line and face to face instruction and adding it up to credit. It’s going to be a real challenge for families to make this work too. Thank you for making this impossible situation wok. 8. ACTION ITEMS A. BUSINESS SERVICES 1.
