Good Afternoon Teachers,
Yesterday I had the awesome opportunity to join the United Teachers of Los Angeles at the picket lines. It was one of the most invigorating experiences in all my years as an educator. As I met with teachers they shared stories from their hearts about having to budget in anticipation for losing a possible week, 2 weeks or even a months worth of pay. God forbid the strike goes on that long! Some parents and members of the community are cooking breakfast for these teachers, and doing random acts of kindness to help them out.
I am sure that many of you have had similar conversations with your friends who work in the field of education. So, in speaking with others, we decided that SGTA needs to step up and help out our fellow colleagues. There is a movement brewing to "Adopt an LAUSD School or Teacher," so here is our plan to show that we care:
1) Talk among the teachers at your site identify a teacher who will be in charge of organizing this campaign! (Scot Leonard has already volunteered to spearhead this campaign at Jefferson Middle School.)
2)Decide which LAUSD school or teacher you may want to adopt. (Keep in mind that many of our own SGTA teachers have spouses who are walking the picket lines!)
3) Gather Gift Cards for Gas, Groceries, Target, etc, from friends and families by Wednesday, January 23rd and give them to the teacher in charge. This teacher will make a list of all Gift cards and donations received!
4) Choose a day, date, or time to deliver this gracious gift to an LAUSD school site or LAUSD teacher!
5) Be sure to take pictures, document, and share with us this act of kindness so that we can post on our SGTA website and/or facebook page.
Thank you so much for supporting your fellow teachers! SGTA ROCKS!
